Sabethes intermedius Lutz, 1904 (in Bourroul, 1904), original combination: Sabethinus intermedius.
Subfamily Culicinae, genus Sabethes. Subgenus Sabethinus currently includes six formally named species. Subgenus abbreviation – Sbn.
Adults of Sabethinus lack leg paddles (distinction from most species of subgenus Sabethes) and lower mesokatepisternal setae (distinction from the other subgenera of Sabethes except some species of subgenus Sabethes). The absence of prealar setae distinguishes them from the adults of Davismyia, and the absence of ventral white scaling on the midtarsus distinguishes them from species of Sabethoides. Sabethinus larvae are readily distinguished from all other Sabethes larvae by the presence of a comb plate and an auxiliary seta 4b-X. The insertion of seta 1-I lateral to seta 2-I in species of Sabethinus is only shared with subgenus Davismyia. The strong development and dorsal position of seta 8-VII readily distinguishes pupae of Sabethinus from those belonging to the other subgenera of Sabethes. See genus Sabethes.
The phyletic affinities of Sabethinus and the evolutionary relationships of the included species are unknown.
Little bionomical information is available for species of Sabethinus. The species are all sylvan. Adults are diurnal and females are attracted to humans on the ground and in forest canopy. They are also known to approach horses and birds. Larvae inhabit uncut and cut bamboo internodes.
Species of subgenus Sabethinus are not known to be of medical importance to humans.
Species of subgenus Sabethinus occur in tropical forests in Central and South America.
