Aedes hoffeinsorum Szadziewski, 1998.
Subfamily Culicinae, tribe Aedini. Aetheapnomyia is an extinct genus with one currently known species. Genus abbreviation – At.
ADULT MALES: Antenna shorter than proboscis, pedicel enlarged, terminal flagellomere with apical stylet-like prolongation; maxillary palpus shorter than proboscis, palpomere 5 greatly reduced, about 0.3 length of palpomere 4; proboscis noticeably swollen distally; wing with slender scales with convex apices, cell R2 of wing much shorter than vein R2+3; fore- and midungues long, unequal, simple, borne well before apex of tarsomere 5, hindungues short, equal, simple; genitalia (see Szadziewski, 1998: fig. 3a) bear some resemblance to certain members of the Ochlerotatus group of subgenera, e.g. Acartomyia. Aetheapnomyia hoffeinsorum was originally described as a species of Aedes (Finlaya). The absence of spotted wings precludes it from being included in Finlaya.
Based on the distinctions and other information contained in the descriptions and illustrations of Szadziewski (1998) and Podėnas (1999), the affinities of Aetheapnomyia with other genera of Aedini (extinct or extant) are uncertain.
Unknown.
The single known species is from Baltic amber (Poland).
