Subgenus Afroculex Danilov, 1989
Culex lineatus (Theobald, 1912), original combination: Pseudohowardina lineata.
Subfamily Culicinae, genus Culex. Subgenus Afroculex is monobasic. See Culex classification, Subgenus Afroculex). Subgenus abbreviation – Afc.
ADULTS – Head black with black erect scales, decumbent pale scales present only on dorsal midline and along margins of eyes; maxillary palpus of females white at apex, that of males as long as proboscis, slender, without setae; scutum uniquely marked with 5 conspicuous longitudinal lines of pale scales; thoracic pleura with 2 longitudinal lines of white scales extending from antepronotum to prealar area and from upper proepisternum to upper mesepimeral setae; lower mesepimeral seta present; subcosta of wing white-scaled except distally, other veins dark-scaled; legs predominantly dark-scaled, fore- and midfemora with complete anterior stripe of white scales, hindfemur with stripe of white scales on distal half, tarsi entirely dark-scaled, hindtarsomere 1 about length of hindtibia; abdominal terga with narrow incomplete apical pale bands. MALE GENITALIA – Tergum IX lobes very narrow, without setae; gonocoxite rather short, stout, with scales laterally, bearing a rather stout specialised seta between base of subapical lobe and attachment of gonostylus; subapical lobe prominent, subapical in position, undivided, bearing 2 stout spine-like setae apically and a less stout one subapically; gonostylus short, rather broad and curved, with terminal claw; paraprocts of peculiar form, with a short spiculate thumb-like projection dorsally from apex; cercal sclerite strongly sclerotised, with a thumb-like projection at base, setae absent; phallosome much as in species of Lutzia, lateral plate a long finger-like process with a group of small spicules on mesal side near midlength. LARVAE and PUPAE – Unknown. See genus Culex.
Danilov (1989) suggested that Afroculex is intermediate between subgenus Barraudius and genus Lutzia based on similarities of the male genitalia. The study of St John (2007) indicated a closer affinity with subgenus Maillotia. Subgenera Afroculex, Lasiosiphon and Maillotia were recovered in the relationship Lasiosiphon + (Afroculex + Maillotia) in the morphology-based phylogenetic study of tribe Culicini conducted by Harbach et al. (2012).
The disease relations of Culex lineatus are unknown.
