Revision of Valid Species List from Mon, 2012-02-13 22:09

Updated 13 February 2012

A total of 3,523 species of Culicidae are currently recognised. Eight species listed as members of the mosquito fauna of Yunnan Province of China by Dong et al. (2004) have not been formally described and have been removed from the Valid Species List. The eight manuscript names, i.e. nomina nuda, include aranoideoides [Tripteroides (Rachionotomyia)], funerearoides [Heizmannia (Heizmannia)], maximalepido [Heizmannia (Heizmannia)], nigerrmus (sic) [Toxorhynchites (Toxorhynchites)], pallidabdomen [Armigeres (Armigeres)], smudges [Uranotaenia (Pseudoficalbia)], spinophallus [Uranotaenia (Uranotaenia)] and splendenroides [Toxorhynchites (Toxorhynchites)]. A ninth species name included in the list of these authors, i.e. pallidothorax [Tripteroides (Rachionotomyia)], was formally described by Dong et al. (2008).

The names of the 3,523 species are listed alphabetically in the pdf attached below. Species names (in boldface) are followed by their authorship and year of publication, and this combination is followed by the current generic (subgeneric) placement of the species (in boldface indigo). The 'current' generic placement of aedine species is based on the phylogenetic classification of tribe Aedini proposed by Reinert et al. (2004, 2006, 2008, 2009). 'Traditional' generic and subgeneric affiliations of aedine species, i.e. those recognized prior to and including the separation of Aedes and Ochlerotatus by Reinert (2000), are indicated in square brackets following current generic names. Species formerly placed in genera Aedes and Ochlerotatus (Reinert, 2000) that are regarded as incertae sedis within tribe Aedini are listed as belonging to a 'traditional' 'genus (subgenus)' to indicate their uncertain generic and subgeneric placement in the current classification of the tribe.
