Revision of Valid Species List from Thu, 2008-03-27 12:14

A total of 3,504 species of Culicidae are currently formally recognized. The names of these species are listed alphabetically in the pdf attached below. Species names (in boldface) are followed by their authorship and year of publication, and this combination is followed by the current generic (subgeneric) placement of the species (in boldface indigo). The ‘current’ generic placement of aedine species is based on the classification of tribe Aedini proposed by Reinert et al. (2004, 2006). ‘Traditional’ generic and subgeneric affiliations of aedine species, i.e. those recognized prior to and including the separation of Ochlerotatus and Aedes by Reinert (2000), are indicated in square brackets following current generic names. Species formerly placed in genera Aedes and Ochlerotatus (Reinert, 2000) that are regarded as incertae sedis within tribe Aedini are listed as belonging to a ‘traditional’ genus (subgenus)’ to indicate their uncertain generic and subgeneric placement in the current classification of the tribe.
