Revision of Valid Species List from Fri, 2010-10-29 09:29

Updated 29 October 2010

A total of 3,528 species of Culicidae are currently recognized. Eight species published by Dong, Zhou & Gong (2004) appear to be manuscript names, i.e. nomina nuda, but are included in the list until their status is clarified. The eight species include aranoideoides [Tripteroides (Rachionotomyia)], funerearoides [Heizmannia (Heizmannia)], maximalepido [Heizmannia (Heizmannia)], nigerrmus [Toxorhyrnchites (Toxorhynchites)], pallidabdomen [Armigeres (Armigeres)], smudges [Uranotaenia (Pseudoficalbia)] and spinophallus [Uranotaenia (Uranotaenia)]. A ninth species name included in the list of these authors, i.e. pallidothorax [Tripteroides (Rachionotomyia)], was formally described by Dong, Dong & Wu (2008).

The names of the 3,528 species are listed alphabetically in the pdf attached below. Species names (in baldface) are followed by their authorship and year of publication, and this combintion is followed by the current generic (subgeneric) placement of the species (in baldface indigo). The 'current' generic placement of aedine species is based on the phylogenetic classification of tribe Aedini proposed by Reinert et al. (2004, 2006, 2008, 2009). 'Traditional' generic and subgeneric affiliations of aedine species, i.e. those recognized prior to and including the separation of Aedes and Ochlerotatus by Reinert (2000), are indicated in square brackets following current generic names. Species formerly placed in genera Aedes and Ochlerotatus (Reinert, 2000) that are regarded as incertae sedis within tribe Aedini are listed as belonging to a 'traditional' 'genus (subgenus)' to indicate their uncertain generic and subgeneric placement in the current classification of the tribe.
